Location & Facility

Our 2018 Christ-centered Summer Camps will be held on the campus of "Servants in Faith and Technology," a training center for future and current missionaries located on a beautiful 175 acre former farm in rural Lineville, Alabama.

          - 90 minutes east of Birmingham AL

          - 90 minutes west of Atlanta GA

​

The campus includes:

- A lodge with bunk sleeping rooms, restrooms, and a large meeting / hangout area

- The "barn" (partially open air) for music and hanging out

- Various areas for classes

- Outdoor chapel

- On site gardens which supply food for meals

- A cafeteria (with farm to table meals)

- A shallow rock river and pond for swimming

- A low ropes challenge course

- A simulated 3rd world village

- A suspension bridge similar to one built by missionaries in Ecuador

- A brick making station for training missionaries and others to make bricks for "rocket stoves"

- Hiking trails

- Fields for ultimate frisbee, soccer etc

The Camp Fee Covers Everything:

The fee for our residential week-long summer camps covers everything; instruction and activities specific to the camp's topic, materials, lodging, meals, camp t-shirt, supervision by counselors and teachers, and access to all activities, etc. There are no additional costs.

                 Students, Schedule & Activities

Student age: Students age 13-18 (entering 8th-12th grade) are eligible to attend camp.

Camps consist of serious academics mixed with good ole-fashioned summer camp fun:

- Swimming (river and pond)

- Game night

- Music and dancing

- Low ropes challenge course

- Ice cream night

- Basketball

- Tie dye Tuesdays

Typical Schedule:

- Sundays between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm central time - students arrive

- 5:00 pm > 11:00 pm - get moved in, eat dinner, meet your counselor and other students, orientation, counselor T time, and lights out.

- 8:15 am - farm to table breakfast

- 9:00 am > 11:30 am - class

- 12:00 noon - farm to table lunch

- 1:00 pm > 3:00 pm - class

- 3:00 pm > 6:00 pm - activities and free time

- 7:00 pm > 11:00 pm - activities, homework, free time, activities with counselors, time with friends, games, counselor T time, etc.

Note: students who are attending both weeks of camp may stay on campus over the weekend with counselors and leaders at no additional charge.

                              Flying to Camp

If you're flying to camp, students should fly into the Atlanta, GA airport (Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport - airport code: ATL). We offer a free airport shuttle bus for students flying into Atlanta.

 

The shuttle leaves the airport at 1:30 pm on Sunday going to camp (your flight should arrive before 1:00 pm) and leaving camp on Saturday, the shuttle returns to the airport by 12:00 noon. Please make your flight arrangements accordingly. This free shuttle service is only provided to students who are flying into the Atlanta airport.

                       Teachers and Counselors

If you talk to anyone who has attended our camps, they will typically be singing the praises of our teachers and counselors. Teaching and counselor positions at our camps are very sought after and thus we get to choose the cream of the crop. These men and women are top notch and we are very grateful for them.

                      Week #1 - June 3-9, 2018

​

---------- Camp Christian Music Jam

​

Camp Description:

This camp is designed for students interested in playing music, song-writing, leading worship, performing and just plain ol’ jamming out. We will be focusing on acoustic guitar, electric guitar, keys, drums, vocal and bass instruments throughout the week. Whether you’re a beginner with no music experience or an intermediate to advanced level musician, all are welcome! Campers will learn basic-advanced instrument instruction and music theory concepts, how to write and structure songs, understand the Christian music industry and how to be a musician in a church/worship setting. Our purpose is to inspire and equip students to use their musical gifts and talents for the Kingdom of God. Activities include:

-  Music instructional clinics in specific instruments and topics

-  Song-writing sessions

- Playing in ensembles

- Learning rock & worship songs

- Concert showcasing campers musical achievements at the end of the week

 

Students will have access to a full band setup including acoustic, electric and bass guitars, keys, drums, amps, a sound system and various other music supplies. Campers are encouraged to bring any instruments they may have, as well as pedals, amps, guitar picks, capos, tuners, guitar straps, etc. A drum set will be provided at the camp for drummers. There are no prerequisites for this camp.

Teacher: Sam and Ali Meador

Sam and Ali Meador are southern California natives who now reside in beautiful South Florida. The music-loving couple attends Christ Fellowship church where Ali serves on the worship team!

 

Sam is a well-versed, highly knowledgeable music instructor with over 10 years teaching experience and 19 years of music training. He holds a degree in Music Composition with a focus on piano and guitar. Sam teaches multiple instruments including piano, guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, and voice and instructs genres of music in classical, contemporary, pop, rock/metal and worship.

 

As a very approachable, patient teacher, Sam has a strong focus on individualization in his teaching methods. He strives to discover what each student connects with musically to provide them with excellence in music education that centers around their interests and goals. He incorporates music theory concepts and fundamentals in a manner that is fun and rewarding, as well as encourages students to discover the joy that can be found in the learning process.

 

Ali has over 16 years of classical, contemporary, and theatrical vocal experience combined with a deep understanding and passion for the human voice. She has performed and starred in musical theater productions from a young age, and continues to perform as a vocalist on studio recordings, as a live performer, and at church.

 

A very communicative and focused leader, Ali has a strong sense of belief in those she mentors. She intuitively uncovers their talents, and creates a clear path to success for their individual goals. Ali combines her to passion for singing with her deep knowledge of fundamental technique to create confidence and excellence in her students!

---------- Camp Engineering

​

Camp Description:

As the number of college graduates receiving engineering degrees rises, many high school students may wonder if this career is right for them. Come find out! Camp Engineering aims to expose students to a variety of engineering disciplines through hands-on learning, videos, guest lectures, and engineering problem solving. The purpose of engineering education is to train students to think like an engineer.

 

To accomplish this, students will work on several different engineering labs and exercises throughout the week. Activities will include: AutoCAD drafting, electrical circuits, elementary data analysis using Excel, programming, environmental sampling, and evaluation of static mechanical systems.

 

The main focus areas of Camp Engineering will be:

• What is an engineer? What does their occupation involve? How do you become one?

• Safety and the ethical responsibilities of an engineer.

• Teamwork and the engineer.

• Simulation of real-world engineering problem solving through the use of finite resources within time constraints.

• The role of technology in the world of engineering.

• What to expect at the collegiate level of engineering education.

 

Teacher: Will Garde

William Garde is a water resources engineer at CDM Smith, Inc. He works in Houston on various water-related projects where he serves in multiple different roles including engineering design, construction management, and resource planning. He is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, where he graduated in the top five of his class and received his B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering and an M.S. in environmental engineering. His thesis focused on an innovative water treatment method for coffee wastewater and his research has been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

 

During his collegiate career, Will staffed two years for Greg Landry aiding in his anatomy and physiology, chemistry, physics, and law camps. Additionally, he was heavily involved in campus ministries where he led small group Bible studies, organized on-campus outreach and hospitality, trained student baristas, and coordinated the worship technical team.

----- Camp Creative Nonfiction Writing & Book Publishing

​

Camp Description:

Ted Kluck leads students through the basics of Creative Nonfiction (memoir, personal essay, long interview) and book publishing basics (including book proposals). Students will also learn to conceive and record their own podcast related to their writing.

 

Teacher: Ted Kluck:

Ted Kluck is an award-winning internationally-published author of 25 books, and his journalism has appeared in ESPN the Magazine, USA Today, and many other outlets. He is screenwriter and co-producer on the upcoming feature film Silverdome, slated for a 2018 release. 

Ted won back-to-back Christianity Today Book of the Year Awards in 2007 and 2008, and was a 2008 Michigan Notable Book Award winner for his football memoir, Paper Tiger: One Athlete’s Journey to the Underbelly of Pro Football. Ted received the Nelson Ross Pro Football Research Award for his 2015 release entitled Three-Week Professionals: Inside the 1987 NFL Player's Strike. 

Ted currently serves as a journalism professor at Union University in Jackson, TN, and coaches long snappers at Lane College. Ted has played professional indoor football, and played and coached in France as a member of the St. Brieuc Licornes. He is a member of the Pro Football Researchers Association.

 ----- Camp Photography

 

Camp Description:

Get ready to have fun and boldly begin using your digital camera to empower that God-created artist within you. During your camp week we will demystify exposure, color balance, and composition; train our eyes to find and use light; take back control of our cameras; tackle fun photo challenges, and be inspired through sharing our work with each other. Above all, Camp Photography will be the place to build confidence in your eye and the art God has placed in your heart, so that you will enlarge your capacity for visual communication and artistic expression. 
 

Teacher: Caitlyn Wise
Caitlyn Wise majored in Fine Art Photography at Milligan College in Johnson City, Tennessee. She was awarded the Artist in Residence position at Milligan College where she assisted in teaching photography classes and with theater productions. She has owned her own wedding and portrait photography business for 10 years. Caitlyn is currently living in Western North Carolina.
 

 ----- Camp Biotechnology & College Science Skills

          (A school year of labs and more)

 

Camp Description:

Ever wondered how they make those fluorescent fish? What does genetically modified mean, anyway, and how do they do it? How is nanotechnology influencing our food, medicine, and environment? What potential jobs are out there, and what is the demand for these positions? We will learn all, as well as useful laboratory techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, and restriction enzyme digests during a week of biotech fun! We'll also work with some fun and unique science skills that will prepare you for college science!

Teacher: Brittany Hamzik

Brittany received her Master’s degree in biology from Edinboro University in 2008. Through the encouragement of friends and family, she left research for teaching. After teaching bioengineering, experimental research, biology, and environmental science in the Florida public school system for several years, she taught biology at Seminole Community College. Although Brittany loved teaching at the collegiate level, she felt God calling her back to high school students. She traveled the country for several years teaching Biology and Chemistry lab intensives for Landry Academy. She lives in Florida with her husband and their precious baby boy.

                  Week #2 - June 10-16, 2018

----- Camp Sustainable Appropriate Technologies

​

Camp Description:

Do you want to learn practical skills that you can use to help people anywhere and particularly in the developing world?  These are skills that will allow you to be the hands and feet of Jesus in practical ways. This intensive hands-on camp will give you a tool-kit to address basic human needs:

​

- Learn brick making for heat efficient rocket stoves and other uses

- Learn roof-top gardening

- Learn to construct heat efficient rocket stoves

- Build a simple solar cooker

- Make leaf concentrate to treat malnourished children

- Learn some simple technologies for clean water and sanitation

- Basic shelter construction

- Learn to preserve foods and “refrigerate” without electricity

- Function and cook a meal in a simulated third-world village

- And more

Teacher: Maggie Moore and Raphael Ogbole
Maggie and Raphael handle appropriate technologies training for missionaries at "Servants in Faith in Technology" (SIFAT) and will teach our camp students. Maggie is a SIFAT Campus employee who teaches appropriate technologies to students of all ages. Raphael is a SIFAT graduate living in Nigeria. He will be on campus this summer to teach what he teaches in Africa.

 

----- Camp Cosmetology

Camp Description:

"THE ULTIMATE MAKEOVER" Hair styles, makeup, manicures and more... Students will learn three haircuts, color, perms, and braids on manikins and themselves. They will also learn styles using curling irons, flat irons, rollers, extensions, and knots. Makeup, manicures, and pedicures will also be a part of our fun learning experience. Future stylists will also learn how to create a "look book" that will help them in their future endeavors.

Teacher: Angie Brock

Angie is a Licensed Cosmetologist with 20 years of experience. She has owned and operated The Colonnade Salon for the past 13 years. Angie and her husband, Ken, have been married for 21 years and live in Demopolis, Alabama. She has been a homeschool mom for 4 years for their two sons: Ridge (16) and Slater (13). Angie has been a volunteer leader for the local Scouting district, 4-H, and Soccer League. Angie and her family worship at Fairhaven Baptist Church, where she enjoys teaching the high school Girl’s Sunday School class, teaching scripture memorization in Bible Drills, and helping in the Nursery Department. Angie’s free time is spent learning to do anything homemade. She enjoys preserving foods, baking bread, and reading.

----- Camp Anatomy & Physiology

          (A school year of labs and more)

​

Camp Description:

This camp is geared toward students interested in careers such as medicine (physician), physical therapy, physical therapy assistant, veterinary medicine, physician's assistant, dentistry, nursing, biology, exercise science, sports medicine, chiropractic, athletic training, nutrition, forensics, etc.

 

The purpose of these camps is to enable students to better understand human anatomy and physiology by engaging in a variety of unique, in-depth, hands-on experiments, labs, and assessments... and have fun doing it!

- Multiple organ autopsy-style dissections
- Wound stitching
- Injection training
- We’ll dissect a variety of cow and sheep organs (similar to human)
- Students will eat ice cream for breakfast to produce a "glucose load challenge" to help them understand the pancreas, glucose absorption, diabetes, normal and abnormal glucose response curves, and the production and function of insulin.
- We’ll do interesting reflex experiments to help understand the nervous system.
- We’ll do vision experiments to better understand the eyes.
- To better understand genetics and heredity, we’ll do experiments using genetic traits.

- Students will learn to stitch "wounds" and give injections on our life-like tissue model

- Students will learn how to determine blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate to aid in understanding the cardiovascular system. 

- To help understand the respiratory system, we’ll do pulmonary (lung) function tests on each student.

- We'll discuss; what they need to know about high school academics and successfully handling college academics, getting into medical school (or the professional school they're interested in), what their options are in various medical professions, the school time required, and how to relate to their professors and peers.

Students will also learn about professions where their skills can be used and how to use their skills to serve others in their Christian walk. There are no prerequisites for this camp.

Teacher: Greg Landry

Greg is a husband to his bride of 30+ years, a homeschool dad, and a former college professor. He grew up in south Louisiana and at age 18 was invited to tryout with the Philadelphia Phillies baseball organization. He played baseball and football in college, and holds a master of science degree from LSU (Louisiana State University).

He has a heart for students and a passion for science... but more specifically a passion for teaching students to see God's hand in every aspect of His creation that surrounds us; to help them see that God's creation didn't just happen by chance - it wasn't an accident, a fluke of nature.

 

Greg has taught thousands of homeschooled students, has mentored students planning to pursue science / pre-med degrees, has taught at a university, has designed and directed a university anatomy and physiology / biology / cadaver lab, has published and presented scientific research, has academically counseled hundreds of college pre-professional (pre-med, pre-dental, pre-physical therapy, etc.) sophomores and juniors, has designed science labs for homeschooled students, and has written science lab manuals.

 

As one homeschool mom described it, "Greg has a unique ability to pull out the most important information and present it in a way that's interesting and easy to understand." Greg and his wife live near Nashville, TN. His desire is to follow the Lord's leading in teaching students to illuminate the incredible creation the Lord has put all around us. It reveals His glory!

----- Camp Computer Game Programming

​

Camp Description:

Students will collaborate in the design and implementation of a video game. From whiteboard sketch to computer screen, they will learn how to create the simple, easy-to-understand components of a game, and how those simpler parts combine to make a more-complex whole. They will learn about the tools that game developers use to create games, and how to prioritize and trim their initial design to meet a looming deadline. 

Working as a team, the students will create a working game from their concept, and demonstrate that game to the other campers at the end of the week. Towards the end of the week, students will participate in "lab time", where they are encouraged to identify and implement changes to the class game to put their own personal touches on the project. This helps ensure that the students understand the material that was covered well enough to venture out on their own.
 

While there are no prerequisites for this camp, each student MUST bring their own laptop. All course materials and requisite software will be provided as part of the camp.

 

Teacher: Joe Hall

Joe Hall has been a professional software developer for more than 20 years. He worked as a programmer for Microsoft and IBM and was the software architect for a Fortune 500 bank. He was the CTO of a ticket sales and servicing company and he started his own consulting company in 2006. Joe makes his living writing desktop, web, and mobile device applications for businesses, but game programming is his passion, and it was gaming that got him into programming in the first place. He was a member of the original Xbox team and he joined the Visual Studio .NET team just after the Xbox was released in 2001. Joe is the author of XNA Game Studio Express: Developing Games for Windows and the Xbox 360, which was published in 2007. Joe also dabbles in sketching, cartooning, and creating 3D models. When you see his artistic creations, you'll understand why he makes his living as a programmer. He Lives with his family in Georgia.
